Canadian Karting Championships 2024: RMC Ontario Race 4 Recap
From August 15th to August 18th, the Hamilton Karting Complex, also known as Canadian Mini Indy, hosted the 2024 Canadian Karting Championships. This prestigious event, which also served as RMC Ontario Race 4, was a double points race, adding extra intensity to the competition as drivers vied for crucial points. The championship featured a comprehensive schedule across three days: qualifying on Friday, heat races and pre-finals on Saturday, and the finals on Sunday. Here’s a detailed recap of the action in the Mini Max, Junior Max, and Senior Max categories.
Mini Max
The Rotax Mini Max category showcased 18 talented drivers from across the country. Qualifying saw Oliver Chasse set a blistering pace to claim pole position. However, it was Brando Londono who dominated the heat races and pre-final, winning all three and showcasing his speed and consistency.
The final race was a thrilling spectacle with multiple lead changes. Ultimately, it was Massimo Lorusso who emerged victorious, securing the Canadian Karting Championship title. Leo Da Silva, despite a fourth-place finish in the final, earned valuable points, extending his lead in the RMC Ontario standings as he heads into the final race.
Junior Max
The Rotax Junior Max category began with a dramatic twist. Qualifying saw Cole Medeiros and Jackson Morley tie for pole position, with Medeiros taking the top spot due to the next fastest time. Medeiros went on to win heat one, setting the stage for a competitive weekend.
In heat two, both of the front row drivers had a DNF and Oliver Mrak was able to seize the victory with a commanding performance. Mrak continued his strong showing in the pre-final, where he finished first with Jensen Burnett charging through the field to secure second place, and Pearce Wade rounding out the top three.
The Junior Max final was a chaotic race, starting in wet conditions with the track still damp despite rain subsiding. The leaders, Mrak and Burnett, fell victim to a wet patch on the track, which caused them to spin out. This left Cole Medeiros to take advantage of the situation, driving a controlled race to claim the Canadian Karting Championship. Medeiros extended his RMC Ontario lead significantly, now over 100 points clear of Morley. Major Makovskis and Isaac Malcuit completed the podium.
Senior Max
The Senior Max category featured the largest field and delivered the most drama. Throughout most of the competition, Diego Ramos and Timothy Pernod took turns in the lead. Diego Ramos secured pole position, while Pernod won Heat 1. Ramos won Heat 2 and Pernod won the Pre-final. It was no surprise that in the final it was Pernod and Ramos doing battle but waiting in the wings and joining in on the fun was Esposito and Gianluca Savaglio. During the final laps a group of Esposito, Ramos and Savaglio hunted down Pernod and the four were all jockeying for position at the finish line.
Ramos finished first followed by Savalio, Espositio and Pernod but post race penalties demoted Ramos and Espositio leaving Savaglio as the winner and Canadian Karting Champion,
With his second place finish, Pernod gained valuable RMC Ontario points and now leads a close championship with the top three are separated by less than 15 points.
